As opposed to an abstention in the UNGA resolution on October 27 related to a ceasefire in Gaza, India voted in favour of one on December 12. A slight difference in the wording of the resolutions as well as the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres invoking Article 99 seem to have affected the overall change. Though Article 99 pertains specifically to the UNSC where the Secretary General can "bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security". The UNSC resolution on Friday was vetoed by the US, a permanent member but it appears to have had an effect with the overwhelming numbers voting in favour in UNGA on Tuesday. A pilot working with IndiGo, a private airline, has approached the Bombay High Court seeking a direction to the Union government to allow him to carry a 'kirpan' while flying. Kirpan is a short knife with a curved blade, worn, sometimes in miniature form, as one of the five distinguishing signs of the Sikh Khalsa. Angad Singh, a pilot with InterGlobe Aviation which operates IndiGo, claimed in the petition filed before the Nagpur bench of the high court that he has the right to carry a kirpan as part of the freedom of religion guaranteed under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution. A division bench of Justices Nitin Sambre and Abhay Mantri on Monday issued a notice to the Union government and the airline, seeking their replies. The Delhi High Court permitted the mother of a Kerala woman, who is on death row in Yemen for killing a Yemeni national, to travel to the West Asian country to negotiate blood money with the victim's family and save her daughter from the gallows. Justice Subramonium Prasad directed the Centre to relax its 2017 notification, which barred Indian passport holders from travelling to Yemen, for the petitioner subject to her filing an affidavit that she will travel with another person to the restive nation to negotiate her daughter's release at her own risk and responsibility without any liability to the Government of India or the state government concerned. The High Court took note of the Centre's submission that India does not have diplomatic ties with Yemen, has closed its embassy there, and that no international treaty is applicable in the present scenario. Four BBC staff members on Tuesday announced plans to leave the organisation and form a new entity in India named Collective Newsroom, which will provide services "as commissioned by the BBC" and in compliance with the country's foreign direct investment (FDI) rules. According to a statement from the UK-based public service broadcaster, Collective Newsroom has been established as an Indian company that is wholly owned by Indian citizens. It replaces BBC World Service India to continue to provide language-based content. The move follows the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) premises in India facing "surveys" by tax authorities and an ensuing investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over alleged FDI violations earlier this year.
